I seem to like the midwestern writers much and like the way this particular writer loves her home on Lake Superior. Ms Bissell's life has not always been easy, but this book is filled with her joy of living on the North Shore of Minnesota where she can look out at Lake Superior at all seasons of the year, all times of day and night. This book is exceptional. The book takes readers over all four seasons, beginning in fall, winter, spring and summer. Beryl was raised in Puerto Rico, didn't like winter, but after moving to Schroeder, decides she loves this time of year with all its ice, snow and beauty.
Ms Bissell and her husband, Bill, after a short vacation, decided they needed a home on the North Shore, especially Beryl. So they made it happen. The two found a house filled with windows looking out upon Lake Superior. The couple fell in love with this house and environment and bought it. Beryl felt, after living in many other places, that this is where she belonged.
Ms Bissell's book is filled with essays, one and a half to two pages. Each season is headed with Seasons of Learning. People are always learning or should be she feels. And how Beryl likes to learn as much as she can about her chosen home and its environment, and how she loves to write about it all.She wishes she had become a naturalist. Now she is one.
Her book is filled with so much joy of life. She loves her husband, Bill, who she dedicates her book to. She loves her home and all of her life.
The book is short, only 161 pages, but is packed with so much, fun, laughs, much else, taking readers into her life and home. There are so many dark books. I took my time reading to be able to fully enjoy. I will read it many times again.

I love the short stories to read when I have a little time and need to transported to another place. I also recommend it for a gift to someone who is ill, so easy for someone to read a couple pages and rest.
A View of the Lake is a collection of short and real stories from an author who is awake to her surroundings and has the gift of describing them in such a way that the reader feels like he/she could have been there. They also contain very poignant insights into the lives of people who actually live on the lake and are part of the author's daily life. I recommend it highly for your reading pleasure.
I bought this book as a gift for my mom for Christmas. She read it right away and absolutely loved it. I have not read it, but hope to in the future.
Thoughtful, interesting, and insightful essays about the wonders and hardships of living on Lake Superior's North Shore. Having grown up near Lake Superior, I could certainly empathize with many of her thoughts and feelings about the area. Very cleanly written; a joy to read.
I read Bissell's "The Scent of God" a few years ago and its mood and beauty stayed with me for a long time after. I have purchased other copies to give as gifts over the years.
I was anxious to read her new work, and I just finished reading "A View of the Lake." I'm struck by what a generous gift of heart and soul it is from the author to all who will read. Reading Beryl's exquisite writing is truly like being vicariously immersed in her life on the North Shore of Lake Superior. The depth, honesty, humility and also humor with which she writes are truly rare.
I read as much as I can and love books...many books are readable; this one is to be absorbed and savored and exulted over more than once. This one is to be owned. I have also purchased another copy to give as a gift, and anyone looking for something to give a reading friend will want to stock up on "A View of the Lake" as well. Beauty and blessing ooze from the pages of this magnificent book of essays.
Thankfully I haven't encountered a bear in my driveway ( or anywhere else!) I could relate and laugh out loud at many of the stories of this city couple transplanted to the wild! We too made a big transition from Chicago to the Lake Superior shore in the UP. The country is beyond beautiful and rugged and not often generous to the ignorant or unprepared. I thought Ms Bissell's writing was wonderful and a real pleasure to read. Each story is a couple pages, so it reads quickly. There was a very unfortunate incident which happened in the authors life and she includes this at the end of the book, which the author uses to give a different perspective of the lake and wild surroundings. I don't know why Ms Bissell included this after an entire book of more lighthearted, charming entries...it was very personal and sad, and quite a letdown for me after enjoying the previous 153 pages. I do know firsthand how life can throw you quickly and without warning, I just don't feel this particular story added anything to the previous series of stories.
