Why Are You Doing This? Jason Books
Jason excels at two things: generating an emotional response in the reader through a minimalist storytelling and visual style and documenting the kinds of existential crises we all face in what can be a lonely world. Almost all of Jason's work involves a lonely character looking for connection (and often coming close before failing).WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS? is and exceptional work. I will put absolutely no genre or medium qualifiers on that statement. I have long maintained that Jason is not only the best graphic novelist working today but one of the best writers/storytellers in any medium. I look for one thing when I read or view anything: The Gut Punch. The Gut Punch is the feeling, upon finishing our reading/viewing, that we have just been knocked for a loop. We have to simply sit for a moment and take in what we have just been witness to. The Gut Punch is what all art strives for because it is the ultimate emotional connection and reaction.
Every time I read Jason's work I get the Gut Punch. WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS? is a particularly fine example. Told in his trademark spare prose and evocative but minimalist illustrations, the story is at once poetic and compelling.
I won't ruin the book for anyone by going into plot details. If you've read Jason and enjoyed his work, you will certainly enjoy this. If you have not read Jason and are considering starting here, it's a great place to start. You'll probably end up like I did: Immediately scrambling to get your hands on everything he's ever done. I cherish my collection of Jason's work and rank it among the finest works of literature in my extensive library.
I have and will continue to teach his work in literature courses, and I will recommend him to everyone.

Why Are You Doing This? Jason Books Reviews
I have been interested in reading Jason's material for a while now. This was my first time reading anything of his and I was really impressed. I was not sure what to expect but the second I read the first page it was so unique and unlike anything I've ever read. His simple yet detailed artwork really stands out among other graphic novels. The way he keeps the dialogue short and to the point makes it easy to read and pay attention to. The story is really a awesome short little story. It is not a long book at all, it will take the average reader about an hour maybe to read. But that hour is worth it, the plot of this book is so simple yet so good. The way Jason builds this world and characters so quick makes it enjoyable to read. My only complaint how ever was how short it was, it seemed very rushed to me. Almost like the plot was happening too fast and it could have been slowed down a bit. However I think that is what makes Jason so unique as a writer and artist. So please check this out if you get the chance!
The work of graphic novelist Jason has fascinated me for awhile now -- his comics feature cartoon animals that wouldn't look terribly out of place in an old-school cartoon, but his subject matter is often dark and quite complex. His comics often also have a touch of the absurd in them, making them straddle the line between realism and sci-fi or fantasy while never quite committing to one side or the other. "Why Are You Doing This?" is a bit of an exception to that rule, with its only real "absurdity" being its cast of anthropomorphic animals... but it's still an unexpectedly thrilling comic, with a plot worthy of a Hitchcock thriller that keeps the tension going until the final few pages.
Alex is a washed-up, directionless young man still reeling from a bad breakup, and who manages to drag himself out of his funk long enough to promise a friend that he'll water his plants while he's on vacation. But a chance encounter leads to him stumbling on his friend's dead body... and him being labeled the prime suspect. On the run and desperate to clear his name, he ends up hiding in the home of a single mother while trying to unravel just who killed his best friend and why... and whether it has any connection to another murder close by. Can Alex track down the real killer and prove his innocence before the police find him... or before he becomes a victim as well?
Jason's artwork is simple and stylized, yet somehow it works for his subject matter. His cartoony animals are never exaggerated or played for cuteness, and his work holds just enough detail to be fascinating. His characters' expressions tend to be a little flat -- their empty white eyes and their faces never show much emotion -- but most of the time you can tell what the characters are feeling via their speech and body language.
The story itself is a noir thriller that wouldn't be out of place among the oeuvre of Alfred Hitchcock, a tale of suspense and danger that nonetheless allows for some very human moments as we learn more about Alex and those close to him -- no small feat for a graphic novel that's only about fifty pages long. It keeps the suspense high and tight until the final couple of pages, and the ending... well, I won't spoil, but dang, that ending...
Another phenomenal work by Jason, and a great read for fans of detective stories and Hitchcockian suspense. Not for kids, as it contains some bloody violence, strong language, and cartoon nudity.
The story was dope. The art was dope. What else do you want? The book was like 10 bucks and it didn't even really cost me anything because I went to the CVS CoinStar and took this old Jason Kidd shoe I use as a piggy-bank full of shiny nickles and instead of just getting a cash voucher like I usually do. My hommie Danny Spit told me you can get a gift card and they don't tax you that 9.8 % like they do when you get that voucher. I was like "Fo reals?!" So boom I put in the coins got like 18 bucks printed out my receipt with the gift card code. Came home hopped on this computer and bought this dope a** book. It got here like in 3 days. I was like "Oh word?" Then I started reading it and after every page I would literally say out loud "Oh Spit!" That's how good it was. Jason is the illest comic noir writer ever. The only reason I gave it 4/5 stars is because it wasn't long enough. If you like reading dope stories and looking at dope art I recommend this book to you. As soon as I get that Jason Kidd shoe piggy-bank filled back up with coins you can best believe I'm hitting up CoinStar and getting another one of Jason's books. Holla! Because It's Real!
Great, clever graphics full of human emotions. Often sad but also often funny. That's all, folks.
Goodbye. That's all. Done.
