So This is How it Ends Avatars Book 1 Tui T Sutherland Books Reviews
I'm not really into sci-fi, though I do love post apocalypse stories(I know, totally contradictory in a way). I had heard about this book and loved the cover, so I figured why not give it a shot. I just finished "The Hunger Games" which I was absolutely bananas for, so I thought I'd go with some more post apocalypse type stories, while I wait for "Catching Fire". I wasn't sure if I'd continue on with the other 2 of this series, but after finishing the first one, I most definitely am!
It started a little slowly for me, I strongly felt the 'young adult' and 'sci-fi' vibe, in the writing style, characters and creatures(which there's nothing wrong with, being that's who its written for!). I always hope when I pick up young adult books, that the only real thing that makes it that genre/age group is the lack of sexual content/language, but that the story can be just as good as regular fiction. After a couple chapters and getting over my lack of sci-fi love, the young adult feeling faded and it just turned into a downright fun, well written book. Lots of mystery & interesting, diverse characters. The ending to this book totally got me, as it wasn't a direction I had guessed for the series.
I really look forward to reading the other two, and to be honest you have to go on to them if you want a conclusion to this story, as the ending of "Avatars so this is how it ends" is a super huge cliff hanger.
Kali lives in New York, and has a tendency to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe. Tigre lives in Chile. He likes animals better then people, but rainstorms make him a little twitchy and he usually ends up running in them. Sort-of. Venus is a perfect teenage pop-star that everyone adores. Almost. Amon is an Egyptian boy who thinks he's got it all figured out. And Gus is a normal teenager who lives in LA with his older brother.
You'd never imagine that any of them would ever have anything to do with each other. Much less something in common. Or that there was any way that most of them would ever meet. Most of them would agree with you.
But when the world seems to end, they are the ones left standing.
I just have to say, this was a really good book. In fact, the main reason I didn't give it a Gold Award was because the ending cliffhanger was so huge and dramatic and cliffhangery that I threw the book. It's just mean to do that when I don't have access to the next book! So, I suppose I'm being selfish in withholding the Gold Award, but it's frustrating! That, however, is a horrible reason to not read this book. Just be forewarned, and maybe have the next book coming soon.
Two more things;
Aside from the fact that there is a TV show called Avatar, and a movie in production called The Avatar, neither of which have anything to do with this story, I could totally see this as a movie. *Hint, Hint*
Tui Sutherland's website is adorable and hilarious, and I definitely recommend checking it out.
And no, I don't know her, but I bet she's cool.

I overlooked this novel once. However, that was due to me checking out a lot of novels at one time. I try to not check out more than I can handle at one time. However, that gets difficult at times because, I can be so fussy when it comes to finishing a novel. That aside, I wanted to see how Tui Sutherland would write a novel where she couldn't add insane amounts of violence since that would've upset moral guardians. (To be fair, those people balk at any violence towards the youth, even if they're teenagers.) Soon after reading the first chapter, I knew that would hate this. All of the characters I've been introduced to are just shallow, vapid, and annoying. Well, infuriating for Kali because, her short temper is somehow an excuse for uncouth behavior. (It doesn't help that a man could never get away with the same flaw.) In addition, two of them are misanthropes.
As much as I think the writing style's abysmal, I'm glad that I wasn't expecting much. It's written as though her intended audience is full of people who can't remember much. Also, I got confused a couple of times. (For the record, I do have good reading comprehension skills.) Also, the explanation given on why most of the humans disappeared seemed flawed. In attempt to explain, she ripped open several plot holes and raised more questions. It doesn't help that all that happened because, the Gods wanted to rule again.
Speaking of questions, I was left with several. If Vicky doesn't like animals, couldn't she just convince her father to choose a different assistant? Even if she lacks good argument making skills, she'd have a case. Also, why wouldn't her own father be concerned about a cat scratching her? First off, cat scratch disease is not a myth created to scare cat lovers so their cats will have an easier time with ownership. Also, his reaction was so unbelievable that suspect that she just wanted to use the Adults are Useless trope. (I guess that's a staple in Young Adult fiction.) Did it not occur to her that her audience might not know what a South African accent sounds like? I guess she knew then assumed everyone else would know, too. I have to wonder if she did any research on Isis before adding her into the story. I say this because, that Goddess is a nice lady. Maybe that's what happens you assume your audience will be clueless about a subject. Never mind that Egyptian mythology is popular.
Even though I appreciate that she showed how fractured Forever's and Always' relationship is instead of insisting it was bad, I just hate how she did it. When Always is first introduced, his wife, Forever, shows no concern about his condition. She just said that she didn't let pain control her. What's even worse is she allows unethical experiments to be performed on him, even though he never acquiesced. It got to the point where they fought for that reason.
A great book.Quite the cliffhanger at the end of the book
Why did it go out of print? I loved every second of this book (and series). This book desperately needs to be put back in print in ebook form at least.
Roughly fourth or fifth grade reader level. My daughter enjoyed it. The cliffhanger ending drives her crazy though.
